Lesson 1 – 4th Grade – Jesus the Promise of God (3)

The Bible is a collection of books. In fact, the word Bible comes from the Greek word Biblia which means books. The books of the Bible were written by different people during more than 1,000 years.

The Bible is divided into two main parts:

The Old Testament and the New Testament.

The Old Testament are the scriptures, or sacred writings of Gods chosen people covering many centuries. It includes book that  contains the history of Gods people, the law of how things were done including the 10 Commandments that God gave to Moses, writings of the profits such as Isaiah who foretold the birth of Christ, Psalm and Proverbs.

You also will fined the story  of Creation, the fall, Noah’s Ark, the story of Jacob’s Ladder.

The Old Testament includes 49 book.

The new Testament is about the life of Christ and the beginning of the Church. It covers about 60 to 70 years.

The New Testament contains the Gospels, history of the early church , letters( epistles) to the churches from St. Paul and other apostles and prophecies found in the book of revelation. New Testament includes 27 books.

The Bible also has a table of contents that list the books, number of chapter and verse. It will look like this: Genesis 1:1 the first number will be the chapter and the second number will be the verse.  You want to fined this passage? you turn to the table of contents to see where the Book of Genesis begins then turn to that page and fined the first chapter and the first verse.

Sometimes two or more books in the Bible have the same name, like 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel. We say First Samuel and Second Samuel. The number in the name of the book helps you tell them apart.

Open your Bible and locate the table of contents.
