Curriculum Covered: The history of the Early Church.
Scripture – Biblical Knowledge
NT: Acts of the Apostles – Christ’s appearance after the Resurrection, Pentecost, miracles of healing in the Early Church, the persecution of Christians and martyrs, the conversion of Saul, the growth of the Church through conviction and evangelizing by the Apostles, the journeys of St. Paul, the Council of Jerusalem and the imprisonment of Paul.
Church History/Holy Tradition
Principle of conciliatory of the Church as seen in the Council of Jerusalem – the origin of the Ecumenical Councils. Christian Persecution.
Doctrine/Dogma
The history of the Church begins with Pentecost. Christ gave the apostles and their successors the command to make disciples of all nations baptizing them and teaching them all that Christ commanded. Salvation is a process requiring faith in Christ and living a life in His image.
Prayer – Liturgical/Personal
Students learn through a study of the Book of Acts that the early Christians lived a life of prayer. Students are asked to relate the importance of prayer in their own lives. Teachers are encouraged to relate opening and closing prayers to the theme being taught such as O Heavenly King when studying Pentecost., St. Ephraim’s Prayer during Lent.
Worship – The purpose and content of Epistles, fellowship and communion of early Christians – Eucharistic gatherings.
Sacraments: Baptism of first Christians at Pentecost. Chrismation as a personal Pentecost that must be renewed and activated.
Ethics/Morality
Importance of spiritual growth and prayer.
Vocation
Stewardship – using gifts wisely to continue the work of Jesus Christ, evangelization , ministry and Christian Action
